Site Accidents At Operational Bases

Following are links to information concerning Atlas missile site accidents that happened during the operational phase of the Atlas missile program. One accident occurred at Vandenberg AFB during the test launch of an Atlas E missile from the Site F coffin launcher complex. Two more accidents occurred at Vandenberg AFB during the test launches of Atlas F missiles from the Site G silo launcher facility. Four Atlas F sites were destroyed due to explosions caused by various issues. Three of the Atlas F sites were assigned to the 579th SMS at Walker AFB in Roswell, New Mexico and one Atlas F site was assigned to the 577th SMS at Altus AFB in Altus, Oklahoma. There were other accidents which resulted in missile damage or loss, but in these cases the site itself sometimes sustained damage but was not destroyed.
