This web site is dedicated to those who served in, supported and helped to maintain the missile sites of the 576th Strategic Missile Squadron. This Air Force unit was the flight test squadron for the Atlas missile program from 1958 until 1966. The 576th SMS was in charge of seven SM-65 Atlas missile complexes deployed at locations in Vandenberg AFB in Lompoc, California. There were a total of 11 launchers at the base. This site is meant to be a source of information related to the 576th SMS and is intended as a tribute to the hard work and sacrifices that were made in successfully carrying out a very difficult mission.
This website has been established as a source of information for those who are interested in the history of the SM-65 Atlas Missile System and the substantial impact that the program had on military and world history and events, including the Cuban Missile Crisis.
